Baba Deep Singh Shaheed (26th January 1682 - 13th November 1757), is one of the most honoured martyrs in Sikh history. Baba Deep Singh was the founder of the Shaheed Misl (group). He was the first head of Damdami Taksal (Damdama school of learning) a 300 years old religious school of the Sikhs which was founded by Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Tall and strong, Baba Deep Singh Ji was an exceptionally brave Sikh. A bold and fearless saint-soldier Baba Deep Singh was ever ready to risk his life for the Panth. Baba Ji was born on January 26, 1682 (some records register this as January 20) and died fighting at Amritsar in November 1757 when he was about 75 years old. From about 12 years of age, he grew up around the tenth Guru, Guru Gobind Singh. Baba Deep Singh spent most of his life as a custodian of the Panth (Sikh community). He and Banda Singh Bahadur are recognised as the most honoured martyrs of the Panth who, together set a unique and amazing example for the community to follow for many generations. Not only was Baba Ji a brave and fearless soldier but a very intelligent scholar who had mastered several languages. From the time when Guru Gobind Singh came to Damdama Sahib, Baba ji was responsible for the distribution of the Guru Granth Sahib to other parts of the world and was the "head granthi" (head priest) of Damdama Sahib in Bathinda.

In 1709, Baba Deep Singh joined Banda Singh Bahadur during the Battle of Sadhaura and the Battle of Chappar Chiri. In 1733, Nawab Kapur Singh appointed him a leader of an armed squad (jatha). On the Vaisakhi of 1748, at the meeting of the Sarbat Khalsa in Amritsar, the 65 jathas of the Dal Khalsa were reorganized into twelve Misls. Baba Deep Singh was entrusted with the leadership of the Shaheed Misl.

Gurudwara Baba Deep Singh ji shaheed is situated in the prikarma of Gurudwara Sri Harmandir Sahib Amritsar. Baba Deep Singh ji was the leader of the famous "Shaheedan Di Misl" among the 12 misls. Apart from getting the Guru granth Sahib'S saroop written, he also actively participated in the all major battles that took place in the 18th century. in the year 1757 when Baba Deep Singh ji got the news that Taimurshah and Jahan khan have shown the disrespact for Sri Darbar Sahib and also starting filling the holy Sarovar, even though Baba ji was in old age he carried a 18 ser heavy Khanda in his hand to free sri darbar sahib. He took pledge to teach a lesson to the cruel and started his journey for Sri Amritsar Sahib. On hearing this, Jahan Khan had made thousands of his soldiers ready on the outskirts of the town near Gohalvadh Village. There was a fierce battle.Baba ji was still far from the town when during his battle with Jahan Khan, he was beheaded. A singh standing close to Baba ji when reminded him of his pledge, such a miracle heppened which has never heppened in the world before Baba ji held his head in his left hand and with his right hand he swayed the khanda with such a force that the enemies started running. Like this, fighting the fierce battle, Baba ji reached Sri Amritsar Sahib and offered his head at Sri Harmandir Sahib. In prikarma, at Shaheed Bunge, this Gurudwara reminds one of Baba ji and acts as a source of inspiration to keep alive the holiness of such places.
