The word Nihang is derived from the Sanskrit word Nishank which means fearless and pure. The one who is without any doubt means Nishank. One who is not attached to anyone means Nishang. This became Nihang. According to some people, the origin of this word is from the Persian word which means sword, pen, horse and crocodile. A similar mention is also found in Guru Shabad Ratnakar Mahan Kosh. This word is used in Sri Guru Granth Sahib and Sri Dasam Granth Sahib.
The Nihang Singh are a religious protectorate of the sikhs and have a gloriuos
history of 320 years. The Khalsa was established in the year 1699 by the last Guru of the
sikh Panth. Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Khalsa Panth had 2 types of soldiers. One was the one who
used to wear
simple clothes and other was the one who used to wear blue colored clothes and wear a big
Turban. Only those who wore blue clothes were called Nihang. Nihang singh usually wear
Amrit.
Weave of Nihangs: Weave of Nihangs means their dress is
different from other Sikhs. Nihang Singh always wear blue clothes. They are accompanied by a
big teg (spear) or sword. He always wear bracelets on their hands and keep a dagger tied
around their waist. Many Sikhs also keep Shields. They are dressed like warriors
It is
also said that Fateh Singh, the youngest of the 4 sons of Guru Gobind Singh ji,
also had to learn the art of warfare like his brothers. The elder brother said that you are
still young. Hearing this, Fateh Singh went to came house and wearing a big turban and a
blue robe and said that now I am not looking small. It is said that it was from here that
the blue dress Nihang sect started trending.
Nihangs also have 2 groups. one who practice celibacy and the other who is a
householder. The Wives and children of the householders
Nihangs also wear the same clothes as the Nihangs and all them walk with the group. They go
round places associated with the lives of Sikh Gurus. Like on the day
of 'Maghi' th go to the Muktsar Sahib, where Guru Gobind Singh blessed 'Chali Mukte'. After
this they go to Aanandpur Sahib to play Holi which is called 'Holla Mohalla'. Similarly,
their groups go to other places. They have 3 parties- Tarna Dal, Bidhi Chand Dal and Budha
Dal. All of them Different chiefs who are called Jathedars.
Work of
Nihangs:
Nihang Singhs recite Gurbani daily, live in Bane, keep treveling, keep practicing weapons
and weapons. They also keep performing their art on their festivals of Sikhs. It is their
job not to raise hands on any helpless, poor or weak, to protect them and to protect
religion. Nihang Sikhs' religious symbol Nishan Sahib is also of blue color, while the rest
of the Sikhs consider saffron colored Nishan Sahib as their religios Symbol. Nihang Singh
also believe in the Adi Granth Sahib (Guru Granth Sahib) as well as Sri Dasam Granth Sahib
and the Sarbaloh Granth.
